The book is dedicated to the last generation of Škoda cars with a rear engine, the Š 105/120/130 model series, whose production exceeded two million cars between 1976 and 1990. It is reminiscent of four-door sedans and two-door coupes Garde and Rapid, but also a varied palette of now almost forgotten variants and prototypes.
Škoda 105/120 series cars belonged to the everyday image of our streets and roads in the second half of the seventies and throughout the eighties. They had an outdated concept with an engine in the back, their sound could not be overheard and the quality was somewhat behind the European average. But they were here and living with us. While in the West they were sold at obscenely low prices, in our country we made money from them for years.
And they usually served their owners for many years. They remained in service until November 1989, but the drastic change in conditions, especially in Prague and in the big cities, sent them into retirement relatively quickly. But many just changed their place of work, replaced even older “embéčka” and “hundreds” in the countryside and started a new life.
The last Škoda cars with an engine in the back practically disappeared from the roads, only the luckiest ones passed into the category of collectors’ items. Let’s appreciate them and let’s not forget that they wrote an important chapter in our motoring history.
