Fiat 500 “Topolino”, 1936-1955 – Le Guide ASI.
The Fiat 500 Topolino was the first truly minimalist car in the history of Italian motoring, marking a watershed between the dawn of the phenomenon and the beginning of the increasingly widespread use of the car as a symbol of individual autonomy. It then emerged unscathed from a world war to re-emerge in the post-war period as an instrument of rebirth and social and cultural redemption. Despite its Lilliputian dimensions and absolutely essential mechanics, it was also able to write stylistic canons indelibly imprinted in the collective memory, rising to pop icon status, and its lines entered a dimension outside of time and passing fads, without ever losing its innate charm. Its history is also one of small “phenomena within the phenomenon”, such as the derivative models: the Furgoncino, the Giardiniera and the Belvedere combined functionality and practicality with an original, unique and irreverent style, with wooden sides and an aerodynamic front combined with the appearance of a spacious work vehicle, all in a matter of centimetres. A true antidote to stress, a symbol of freedom and carefree living.
