‘Road cars are used to finance racing,’ said Enzo Ferrari. Unfortunately, however, at the end of the difficult 1970s, things changed: the economic boom and la Dolce Vita were a distant memory, and high-performance cars were no longer selling so well. A way had to be found to offer more ‘accessible’ and less demanding cars without running the risk of damaging Ferrari’s reputation as the undisputed symbol of Italian manufacturing excellence around the world. The Maranello-based manufacturer not only found that solution but also brilliantly executed it with the Ferrari 308: compact, fast, muscular, with all the brand’s DNA clearly imprinted in the magnificent lines sketched by Pininfarina, powered by an unforgettable 3-litre V8 with a symphonic sound… in short, a Ferrari. Just as Ferrari and unforgettable are the “small” 2-litre model derived from it, the 208, only initially marred by a lack of power but soon remedied with the addition of a turbocharger, and finally the 328, as tried and tested and reliable as a saloon, as manoeuvrable as a small car, as powerful as a true supercar and as beautiful as few others.
